On December 4 and 5, 2017, IC-IMPACTS held a workshop hosted by Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. (TCS) at the Tata Research Development and Design Centre (TRDDC) in Pune, India. Guests and researchers leading projects funded by IC-IMPACTS presented updates, shared knowledge, and discussed areas for future potential collaborations with TCS and other industry partners in India and Canada. Research areas consisted of:
Canadian and Indian scientists, including members of TCS, who are working on current projects were invited to the workshop, along with special guests. After an auspicious lighting of the lamp ceremony to open the session, four introductory presentations were made to provide attendees with an overview of research areas covered in the workshop.
Twenty-four presentations were made over two days and covered wide-ranging research, from solar energy-powered smart buildings to affordable hand-held kits for detecting tuberculosis. Among many notable presentations was one by Dr. Vissandjee Bilkis, from the Université de Montréal. She gave a particularly riveting talk on the role that gender equity plays in IC-IMPACTS research initiatives.
At the end of the presentations on the second day, a panel discussion was held about the outcomes of IC-IMPACTS research through collaborations with industry and demonstration projects in communities.
Moderated by Dr. Nemkumar Banthia, CEO and Scientific Director at IC-IMPACTS, the panel featured special guest Jordan Reeves, Consul General of Canada in Mumbai, India, as well as Ravindra Naik, head of the TRDDC, and IC-IMPACTS researchers Dr. Stewart Aitchison and Dr. Madjid Mohseni. The lively discussion sparked ideas that led to concluding remarks and actionable next steps.
The conference set the stage for rich conversation among researchers. They shared stories about the progress of their research and learned obstacles they faced, which led to further discussion about tackling roadblocks and developing potential collaborations.
