IC-IMPACTS’ Associate Scientific Directors Lead the Way

Both Dr. Stewart Aitchison, IC-IMPACTS’ Associate Scientific Director and Theme Lead for Public Health: Disease Treatment and Prevention, and Dr. Sushanta Mitra, IC-IMPACTS’ Associate Scientific Director and Theme Lead for Integrated Water Management, captured headlines recently for their ground-breaking research.

CHIPCARE’S HANDHELD ANALYZER ATTRACTS ONE OF CANADA’S LARGEST-EVER HEALTHCARE ANGEL INVESTMENTS
Dr. Stewart Aitchison (pictured top left) is a member of team of investigators who recently received one of the largest ever angel investments in Canada’s Health care sector. The new technology created by the group is an innovative, handheld point-of care analyzer which could significantly improve HIV diagnostics in the developing world.

FROM LAB TO FIELD – NEW WATER QUALITY SENSOR A GREAT SUCCESS
Dr. Sushanta Mitra, and his team of researchers has successfully tested a rapid water monitoring sensor that can detect a small amount of E.coli (a common pathogen) in water. The key aspect of this sensor technology is the ability to detect the presence of E.coli within about 10-15 minutes. Compared to traditional assay based techniques which can take between 24-48 hours, this new technology can dramatically improve response times to pathogen outbreak and presence in water and help water managers and individuals to know when water is safe or not to drink.
