Construction for the IC-IMPACTS Advanced Pavements Project was completed on October 6, 2015.
The innovative pavement project takes place near Thondebavi Taluk, Karnataka (just outside Bangalore, India) where community members are desperately in need of better road infrastructure. The new pavement technologies utilize super-thin pavements and smart sensors and project to increase road lifespan by 15 years.
Overall these new roads will use significantly less material, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and recover surface water. With over 46% of roads in India unpaved, there is immense potential for this technological deployment. IC-IMPACTS developed these innovative road designs through multi-faceted partnerships between Canadian and Indian industry and academic partners.
Improved drainage will be added to the road to help recover surface water. The collected water will flow into a water treatment unit and will be treated where it can be used safely.
The road will be continually tested and monitored year after year to ensure quality, with clear indications of durability and performance within 6 months.
