IC-IMPACTS Will Deploy Advanced Technologies and Solutions in Infrastructure at the Chawathil First Nation Community, in Hope, B.C.
On Thursday, May 2, 2019 IC-IMPACTS was invited to the Chawathil First Nations community in Hope, B.C. for a groundbreaking ceremony to set up an infrastructure technology demonstration project.
IC-IMPACTS advanced self-repairing pavement technology will soon be deployed and the community will see the installation of new pavements using fiber reinforced concrete. The pavement will be composed of concrete incorporating scrap tire fibers, cellulose fibres, and other recycled material. The deployment is part of an ongoing research project spearheaded by Dr. Nemy Banthia, IC-IMPACTS CEO and Scientific Director and theme lead for Safe and Sustainable Infrastructure, who is also a professor of civil engineering at the University of British Columbia.
The material is designed not only to reduce the life cycle costs, but to also enhance the performance of the concrete by increasing its durability. Concrete structures develop cracks over time, these fibers help bridge the cracks, enabling the structure to withstand extreme weather conditions.

The groundbreaking took place at the Chawathil First Nation community with the presence of the community elders, local secondary school students, and a number of other community members. Chawathil First Nation, operates the Telte-Yet Campground, located on the Fraser River in Hope, BC and is a party to a Strategic Engagement Agreement with the Provincial Government.
