IC-IMPACTS and the Department of Science and Technology, India (DST) have successfully selected 5 new research projects in the smart and green buildings sector.
IC-IMPACTS and DST partnered in 2016 to support innovative research in Smart and Green Buildings for Sustainable Cities. According to the United Nations Environment Program, buildings are responsible for about one-third of total global greenhouse gas emissions and 40% of all energy consumption. Together, the scientific and industrial communities of Canada and India seek to devise clean technologies and novel approaches to create more sustainable infrastructure.
These new projects provide a continuing platform for bilateral academic and industry collaborations that will create new market pathways and improve the lives of Canadians and Indians.

Dr. Ivan Bajic (Simon Fraser University) and Dr. Angshul Majumdar (IIT Delhi) aim to use non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM) to reduce energy and water waste in buildings.
Dr. Constantin Christopoulos (University of Toronto) and Dr. Ravi Sinha (IIT Bombay) have proposed to develop a new seismic isolation platform (SIP) that is cost-effective and scalable for urban settings.
Dr. Bruno Lee (Concordia University) and Dr. Srinivas Reddy (IIT, Madras) aims to “smart” concepts and identify optimal configurations to achieve net-zero energy buildings (NZEB).
Dr. Raja Sengupta (McGill University) and Dr. Prasad Pathak (Shiv Nadar University) are using real-world quantitative data to understand building energy demands and build and deploy a low-cost sensor network for better temperature mapping.
Dr. Mark Fox (University of Toronto) and Dr. Krithi Ramamritham (IIT Bombay) will study detailed building usage data to inform peak usage capping, demand response, and energy evacuation for improved building management.
