Project Summary:
The focus of this project is to develop the self-sensing composite, which can serve as a potential solution towards the crack detection/monitoring for smart concrete structures. Self-sensing composites are becoming highly attractive for civil engineering applications to improve the safety and performance of structures. These smart composites show a detectable change in their electrical resistivity with applied stress or strain and this unique characteristic make them useful for health monitoring of structures. Till date, different forms of carbon composites, i.e. short fibre, continuous fibre, particles, nano fibres, nanotubes, etc. have been utilized for this purpose. In this context, the present work aims to develop different self-sensing composite systems used for the health monitoring of civil engineering structures. The process of monitoring of deformation and damage that occur within civil engineering structures is commonly known as Structural Health Monitoring (SHM). Develop effective manufacturing processes for three categories of smart fibre-reinforced composites with integrated fibre optic sensors (FOS) i.e. pultruded glass FRP reinforcing bars; sheets for externally bonded carbon FRP systems; and carbon fabric grids for FRCM strengthening. By harnessing strong scientific and engineering backgrounds of the applicants, this proposal will frame future pathways of crack monitory systems for FRP reinforced concrete system from the theoretical curiosity to its practical designing which will enrich the world-leading advanced composite and building material research community.
